Last March 3, 2018, Manila Ocean Park successfully brought back to the wild 30 juvenile white-spotted bamboo shark to the waters of Bagac, Bataan in celebration of World Wildlife Day. The said activity is also part of their 10th year anniversary and their continuous commitment to marine education and environmental conservation.
A program was held before the release led by EVP and COO, Mr. Francis Low, where he tagged the 30 sharks before releasing them in the coast. In attendance are their local partners from Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and the Local Government of Bagac. Short messages were delivered by the partners’ officers highlighting the importance of Sharks in the ecological composition of our ocean. As per Director of BFAR- Region 3 Director Wilfredo Cruz, these are migratory making the protected areas of Bagac as their temporary refuge.
Afterwards the team proceeded to the shore to release the White-Spotted Bamboo Sharks which measures up to 6-16 inches, while the other Sharks were released in the middle of the ocean. The program ended with hope that awareness and actions would be given to our coastal areas.
